Writer's picture: Roy and RhonRoy and Rhon

What is a creek?

A stream, brook, or minor tributary of a river.

Why is the water black?

A blackwater creek has the characteristics of a Blackwater river. It's "a slow-moving channel flowing through forested swamps or wetlands. As vegetation decays, tannins leach into the water, making a transparent, acidic water that is darkly stained, resembling tea."

"The dark color comes from humic acid due to an incomplete breakdown of phenol-containing vegetation from sandy clearings." The farm is located south of the coastal zone in the white sand belt. The white sands support a dense hardwood forest.
